Anyhow, in long range, if the opponnent has a gun, you wont be able to shit, but in close combat it still is a deadly form of defence. The moves are swift and steady, and require lots of concentration, it's not as simple as just running towards your opponnent with the sword above yer head. The martial arts revolving around the sword are stylish ones too.

There are tons of legends of skilled warriors that could deflect arrows with their swords/etc, and that's where all the amazing mangs/animes/movies have evolved from.

They had to master both sword and word, they were just as good as poetry as they were at fighting, and they had an honorable code they used.

You won't be able to find a real Katana in your local supermarket, and samurais don't exist anymore, but they're a part of a an era of history I find fascinating. Real Katanas are works of art, they look beutiful their blades are sharp as razors, and a skilled person could easily chop people in half with a swift swing. I admire Katanas because they are ancient piece of Japanese culture. Putting in acount they had a lot of practise in fighting real opponents, instead of hacking limbs of prisoners and tatami-mats, they would utterly destroy a SAMURAI.

And the people saying: "but the plate-armor made them slow, if they fall down they can't get up", full plate-armor weighted around 25 kilos, making sprinting and even jumping possible. The plate armor of the Teutonic Knights would just dull a katana, or probably break it in two. Supreme armor would leave little weaknesses for the katana to exploit, while the SAMURAI had inferiour protection. I'm not an European warfare fanboy, but pitting a SAMURAI against a Teutonic Knight, a Knights Hospitaller or a Knight Templar would see the knights coming out on top. Hence the katana not changing over a long period of time. With the complete isolation by Japan, new inovations were less important. Heavier armor meant heavier swords, and gradually the sword say less and less use, focusing more on warhammers and halberds to penatrate armor. Their armor and swords were among the best in the world. Knight in that time did more than just writing poems and chasing tail, they were veterans, hardened by constant war. War after war made sure only the best designs survived, making new inovations like plate-armor neccesairy. Don't forget, after the fall of the Roman empire, Europa was in a state of anarchy that lasted over a 1000 years. And apart from infighting, little excusions in Korea, and the few Mongolians that survived paying Japan a visit, haven't had the practise Europeans had at the time. People are forgetting that Japan have had a history of complete isolation.

One slice of its katana, one scream of Ki'Ai! and the knight would be cut in half. Ask anyone on the Internet, the SAMURAI would totally destroy any European Knight of its time (lets say 1300). With that being said, SAMURAI were the best warriors in feudal Japan. The SAMURAI are such awesome killing machines, and when wielding a katana, can only be written in CAPS to display their awesomeness. It won't do your katana good.Īnother thing is the mighty SAMURAI. Katanas are great for cutting off heads, arms etc, but don't go trying it out on chainmail, plate armor etc. One of my friends is the biggest katana-fanboy you'll ever meet, saying: "a good katana never needs sharpening, it never gets dull". It also means that it needs a LOT of care, or it will lose it's sharpness. Even a very good katana won't be able to cut trough plate armor. With that being said: It's the best sword WITHIN ITS NICHE. It's not a weapon of mythical power, and owning a katana will not grand you super hyper kensai fighting power. You'll not be able to slice armor and guns in two, deflect bullets and god knows what. Real katanas (not the 7 dollar Walmart Battle-ready Dragon Katanas) are pretty good but have their limitations. I'll probably get flamed for this, but I don't understand why people these days (mostly anime fanboys) worship katanas.
